Rifle, Colorado

Even people who live there do not know where the name came from.  I looked it up and apparently the small town was named after Rifle Creek.  It was rumored that two trappers in 1882 were hunting and one of the trappers laid his rifle down next to the creek. Accidentally, he left it lying there and therefore, the name.

Not a big woo! That was the first place we stayed because it was cheaper than the expensive ski resort towns.

Now Parachute, Colorado has a much more interesting origin of its name. Several streams converge on the town as the shroud lines of a parachute which resembles a canopy of a parachute; thus the name.
