Augustow Kanal Locks

Linking to Weekend Reflections
and Shadow Shot Sunday 2

The Netta River close to the 2nd lock on the Augustow Kanal system.
This is the second lock on the Augustow Kanal and the Netta River near Sosnowo Lock - part of the 18 Locks, with 14 being in Poland and 3 in Belorussia.  During World War II, the Germans blew up this lock and two more, plus a dozen bridges and eight weir (a low built dam) in Poland. The people of Poland rebuilt this lock in 1948.

Sosnowo Lock

Debowo Lock is the first lock on the Augustow Kanal system.
 Debowo Lock gatehouse.
 Jaminy village home
Janowek is where my 2nd great grandmother Rose Zagorski lived before she married Karol Staranowicz. We still have Zagorski and Sadowski cousins who live in this area. They are very popular names so it is hard to find connections to the living cousins.

A home in Jaziewo village where my Mathia Zdanowicz was born in 1747. I have no way to find which home he lived in and I am sure it is not a lovely modern home like this one.

Rozalia Janewicz (born in 1809) from Jaziewo married Stefan Zagorski from Janowek in 1825 at the Krasnybor Church. These villages are so close together. This day I walked the streets where my ancestors walked. It is customary in these villages to build your home as close to the street as possible.

Two residence of Jaziewo who live above everyone.

Clouds reflected on these lovely lace curtains.

I love the pair of storks!!! The picture looks like a fairy tale. The lock is so different to me, and interesting. I guess I have never seen one before. I always thought Lock was another name for lake, like in Scotland. But now I don't know exactly what it is. But I do know it is something new and very unusual for me!

Ruth,
That house is gorgeous. I love these photographs.
I have watched boats/ships being in a lock and how they are raised and it is breathtaking and I am mesmerized by them.

Have a Great Weekend!

Peace :)

Ruth,

I am so enjoying your posts of Poland, and today is no exception! How dramatic to be walking the streets of your ancestors, in search of houses that they might have occupied, while being observed by current inhabitants who reside in 'high' places.;)

I cannot stop admiring that dreamy cloud reflection in the lace curtain - so charmingly serene!

Sounds like it may have been a challenge to find some of your relatives but wonderful that you did!

Love your connection with your ancestors in this lovely little town! The locks are fascinating...glad they were able to be rebuilt. They look a lot like the locks at a place called Great Bridge in Va. where a battle was fought in our Revolution.
