The historic Provo Tabernacle caught fire from a faulty light switch. All that remained standing were the original brick walls.
Originally, it was built in 1886 and then dedicated in 1889, it went through several renovations to update the heating and electrical. I even remember going to a Christmas musical one year with my daughter when she was at the University - the music was all in German.
The fire gutted the building in December 2010 along with a $150,000 piano and art work.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints wanted to save portions of this historic building and decided to turn it into an LDS temple. They put it walls on stilts while building a new foundation.
Work has been in progress for some time. What puzzles me is that in 2014 the Angel Moroni golden statue has been placed on this building before it is finished.
I caught a nice reflection of it in the window of the historic building across the street.

Such a historic old building and I am pleased they decided to try and keep the walls.It looks a mighty task to renovate.

ReplyDeleteThese are amazing pictures. I have never seen a building reconstructed in this way, with the stilts and raising it up. I'm thinking the angel is there to let people know what they are building, plus it will give encouragement as well!

An amazing makeover of this grand old building. I can't believe it was propped up on stilts. That would have taken a lot of planning. Beautiful framed reflection of it all.

I'm glad they are restoring or keeping parts of the building. I'm reminded about impermanence and how life somehow goes on regardless of it.
ReplyDeleteNice shots! My ancestors were living in Spanish Fork Utah when that building was built. It's strange to think that they might have seen it new or even walked inside. :-)
